Vice President urges prison officers to respect inmates' dignity

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged officers of the Ghana Prisons Service to uphold the dignity of inmates and give them opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

According to MyJoyOnline, citing the Ghana News Agency, she was speaking at the graduation parade of 609 officer cadets from Intakes 33, 34 and 35 at the Premier Centre for Prisons and Correctional Innovations at Fumso, in the Adansi Asokwa District of the Ashanti Region.

The cohort of 392 men and 217 women was commissioned as Assistant Superintendents of Prisons.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang said humane treatment of inmates was a fundamental responsibility of the Service and called for professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights.

She announced the commissioning of the Damongo Camp Prison, reaffirmed the government's commitment to completing the remand facility at Nsawam, and called for better case management, action on overcrowding and alternatives to custodial sentencing.

She also appealed to the public not to stigmatise former inmates and to support their reintegration after they have served their sentences.
