National Teaching Council revokes licences over teacher-student misconduct

Ghana's National Teaching Council (NTC) says it has revoked the professional licences of teachers found responsible for sexual misconduct involving students.

According to Atinka Online, the council's Public Relations Officer, Dennis Osei Owusu, disclosed the enforcement measures during an interview on Atinka TV's Ghana Nie programme.

He said several teaching licences had already been revoked following investigations into misconduct involving teachers and students.

The council warned that affected individuals would not be permitted to continue teaching, including by offering private lessons.

Osei Owusu explained that the Ghana Education Service, as the employer, was responsible for investigating allegations against teachers, while the relevant regulatory bodies could impose professional sanctions following established findings.

He said the council would act against teachers who attempted to continue practising after losing their licences.

The report did not identify individual teachers, disclose the precise number of revocations or establish whether the cases resulted in criminal prosecutions.

Licence revocation is a professional disciplinary measure and does not, by itself, establish a criminal conviction.
