Muntaka urges agencies to share data to fight transnational crime

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has called on institutions in the West African Police Information System (WAPIS) Ghana Programme to show sustained commitment to the system to improve criminal investigations.

According to 3News, the Minister spoke at a meeting of the WAPIS Ghana National Committee (WANACO) at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

He said the increasingly transnational nature of crime, including human trafficking, drug trafficking, cybercrime and financial crime, required effective information sharing and cooperation among law enforcement agencies, and that criminals exploit gaps in communication between them.

Mr Muntaka said the effectiveness of WAPIS depended not only on technology and infrastructure but also on inter-agency collaboration, accurate criminal data, adequate resources and the retention of trained personnel.

He urged WANACO to make sure its deliberations led to clear decisions, defined responsibilities and measurable outcomes, and said the system's success could not rest solely on the Criminal Investigations Department or the WAPIS Centre.

The meeting brought together representatives of the European Union, ECOWAS, INTERPOL and Ghanaian security and law enforcement institutions to discuss the progress, challenges and sustainability of the programme.
