Akwasi Konadu, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, has asked for a full review of the government’s Blue Water Guards programme. He wants an independent audit to check how it is run.
This call comes after nine people working with the programme were arrested. The arrests happened in Manso Adubia in the Ashanti Region.
The arrested individuals are accused of taking money illegally. They are also accused of pretending to be official members of the Blue Water Guards.
MP Konadu stated that these arrests raise serious questions. He is concerned about the supervision and accountability of the programme.
He believes the effectiveness of the Blue Water Guards in fighting illegal mining needs to be thoroughly examined.
The programme is meant to help stop illegal mining activities across the country.
Further details on the investigation into the arrested personnel are expected from the Ghana Police Service.
