A 70-year-old woman in Accra has lost GH₵50,000 from her mobile money account. The loss occurred after her SIM card was swapped without her knowledge.

The incident is a SIM swap scam, a type of fraud where criminals trick mobile network operators into transferring a victim's phone number to a new SIM card they control.

Once they control the number, they can intercept verification codes sent via SMS. This allows them to access and empty mobile money wallets and bank accounts linked to the phone number.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed an investigation into the matter. They are urging citizens to remain vigilant against such scams.

The police advise the public not to share personal information or Mobile Money Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) with anyone.

Victims of scams are encouraged to report incidents to the nearest police station as soon as possible.

This case highlights the ongoing threat of mobile money fraud in the country.

Authorities are working to apprehend those responsible for this fraudulent activity.
