A twenty four year old man has been remanded into police custody by the Cape Coast Circuit Court following his arrest for alleged involvement in mobile money fraud. According to a report by GhanaWeb the suspect is accused of using sophisticated SIM swapping techniques to gain unauthorized access to the accounts of multiple victims across the region.

Prosecutors informed the court that the suspect targeted several individuals by intercepting their telecommunication signals to bypass security protocols. The Ghana Police Service has not yet released the specific monetary value of the total losses incurred but investigators stated that the scale of the operation suggest a coordinated effort to defraud the public.

The presiding judge ordered the accused to be held in police custody to allow the prosecution further time to conduct investigations and locate potential accomplices. A report from Citi Newsroom indicates that the rise in SIM swapping incidents has prompted the National Communications Authority to issue new warnings regarding mobile security and the protection of personal identification numbers.

The suspect has not yet entered a formal plea to the charges of defrauding by false pretenses and unauthorized access to electronic records. Family members of the accused were present in court but declined to speak with the press. The case has been adjourned and the suspect is scheduled to reappear before the Cape Coast Circuit Court later this month for further proceedings.
