An Accra Circuit Court presided over by Judge Isaac Addo has remanded a businessman into police custody following allegations of a multi-million cedi procurement scam. According to a Graphic Online report, the accused person stands charged with multiple counts of defrauding by false pretenses and personation. The court heard that the suspect allegedly claimed to be a procurement officer acting on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
Prosecutors informed the court that the individual falsified government documents and purchase orders to lure suppliers into providing various goods valued at approximately GH₵2 million. A GhanaWeb report indicates that the complainant identified the suspect after several payments for delivered items failed to materialize. Investigations by the Ghana Police Service suggest the suspect had no official affiliation with any state agency during the period of the alleged transactions.
During the court proceedings, the defense counsel requested bail for the accused but the prosecution opposed the application. As reported by Citi Newsroom, the prosecution argued that the suspect posed a flight risk because investigations into the full scope of the procurement scheme were still ongoing. The court agreed with the prosecution and ordered the suspect to be held in custody until his next scheduled appearance.
The Accra Circuit Court has ordered the police to expedite their investigations into the matter to ensure a speedy trial. Official court records state that the businessman is expected to return to court for further witness testimony. The presiding judge emphasized the gravity of the charges and the significant financial loss suffered by the victims in this alleged criminal enterprise.
