An Accra High Court has sentenced three men to various prison terms after finding them guilty of trafficking fentanyl, as reported by Citi Newsroom. The convictions reportedly follow a joint operation by intelligence agencies and the Ghana Police Service.
Court documents confirm the sentencing took place on October 30, 2023. The Ghana Police Service spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Danso, stated that the operation leading to the arrests involved extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering.
The men identified in court filings are Kwesi Mensah, who received a 15 year sentence, Samuel Osei, sentenced to 12 years, and Kofi Adu, who was given a 10 year term. These details were confirmed by a Daily Graphic report referencing court proceedings.
A total of 2.5 kilograms of fentanyl was seized during the operation, according to an official statement from the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC). The commission emphasized the dangers of fentanyl and its commitment to combating its illegal distribution in Ghana.
The specific charges against the individuals included illegal possession of narcotic drugs and engaging in narcotic drug trafficking, as outlined in the high court judgment. Legal representation for the accused could not be immediately confirmed by independent sources.
