The Narcotics Control Commission confirmed the seizure of approximately 500 kilograms of suspected illicit substances at the Tema Port on Wednesday. According to a Ghana News Agency report, the substances were discovered during a joint operation by the Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority. The cargo was allegedly concealed within a merchant container that had been flagged for secondary inspection by port officials.

Authorities stated that the shipment was destined for international markets before it was intercepted at the coastal facility. A statement from the Ghana Police Service indicated that the exact chemical composition of the seized material is currently undergoing forensic testing at the Ghana Standards Authority. Investigators are working to determine the origin of the shipment and the identities of the individuals or entities listed on the bill of lading.

While the Ghana News Agency reported the weight as 500 kilograms, officials from the Narcotics Control Commission noted that a final verified weight will be established following laboratory analysis. No immediate arrests were made at the scene, but security agencies have launched a coordinated manhunt for the suspects involved in the attempted export. GhanaWeb reports that port security has been heightened following the discovery to prevent further smuggling attempts.

The Ministry of Interior has been briefed on the operation and has lauded the vigilance of the inter-agency task force. Legal proceedings are expected to commence once the suspects are apprehended and formal charges are filed by the Attorney General Department. The intercepted substances remain in the custody of the state at a secure location as investigations continue into the alleged organized crime network.
