The Drug Enforcement Commission intercepted a shipment containing 500 kilograms of suspected cocaine at the Tema Port during a specialized search operation. According to a GhanaWeb report, the illicit substances were discovered concealed within heavy industrial machinery that recently arrived on a vessel from South America. Initial investigations suggests that the shipment was intended for local distribution or transit to international markets.

Authorities have detained three port officials in connection with the seizure according to statements provided to GhanaWeb. The identities of the suspects have not yet been released while the Narcotics Control Commission and the Ghana Police Service conduct a broader investigation into the logistics chain. Officials stated that the suspects remain in custody and are being questioned regarding the clearance procedures for the machinery.

The Drug Enforcement Commission has not yet issued a formal public breakdown of the estimated street value of the seized narcotics at this time. A separate report from Citi Newsroom indicates that port security has been intensified following the discovery. Security agencies are working to determine if the industrial shipment had been tampered with before arrival or if local port infrastructure was intentionally compromised to facilitate the smuggling.

The narcotics have been moved to a secure location for forensic testing and verification by the Ghana Standards Authority. Under Ghanaian law, the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This seizure represents one of the largest recorded discoveries at the Tema Port in recent months as the government continues its crackdown on international drug trafficking routes through West African ports.
