A joint operation by security personnel led to the interception of a significant consignment of suspected narcotics in the Volta Region. According to a Modern Ghana report the incident occurred near the border town of Aflao where a truck was found carrying over fifty sacks of compressed dried leaves alongside other goods. Authorities believe the substance is Indian hemp intended for smuggling across the border.
The Ghana News Agency reports that the intercepted vehicle was moved to a secure location for a detailed search and inventory. Security agencies including the Narcotics Control Commission and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority have reportedly increased surveillance in the region to curb the rising trend of drug trafficking through unofficial land routes. No names of specific suspects have been released to the public as investigations continue.
A report by GhanaWeb states that the security forces acted on intelligence regarding the movement of illegal substances within the border enclave. The sacks were hidden under other commercial items to evade detection by patrol teams on the road. Security officials noted that the seized items will be subjected to laboratory testing at the Ghana Standards Authority to confirm the exact nature of the herbal matter.
This seizure comes at a time when the Ghana Police Service and partner agencies are intensifying efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks in the Volta Region. While the driver and passengers of the truck are being questioned the security command has remained tight lipped about their identities. The High Court in the region is expected to receive formal filings once the preliminary investigation is concluded and the suspected narcotics are verified.
