Highway patrol officers attached to the Northern Regional Police Command intercepted a long haul cargo truck along the Tamale stretch according to a report from the Ghana News Agency. The vehicle was allegedly transporting more than 500 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis. The illicit substance was found concealed beneath layers of legitimate agricultural produce during a routine security stop.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the seizure occurred during an intensified patrol operation aimed at curbing the transport of contraband across regional borders. According to a report from Citi Newsroom the officers conducted a thorough search of the vehicle after noting suspicious behavior from the occupants. The security team discovered several bags containing the compressed slabs hidden at the base of the truck cargo area.
Police officials in the Northern Region stated that the driver and one other individual found on the truck were taken into custody for further interrogation. A report by Daily Guide Network indicates that the suspects are being held to assist with investigations into the source of the substances and the intended recipients. The truck and the seized items have been impounded at the regional police headquarters for forensic analysis and inventory.
The Ghana Police Service has not yet released the identities of the suspects pending formal charges in court. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks operating within the country. While the Ghana News Agency reported the initial discovery the police have clarified that the weight and street value of the suspected cannabis will be determined following an official examination by the Narcotics Control Commission.
