The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the unlawful possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following an intelligence-led operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.

Police say the arrest took place on January 26, 2026, when officers on snap check duty stopped a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 at the Asanso checkpoint. The vehicle was being driven by the suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani.

According to the police, a search conducted on the vehicle led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks concealed inside the bus. When the sacks were opened, officers found dried leaves compressed into slabs. A total of 713 slabs of the suspected narcotic substance were retrieved.

Police further allege that during the arrest process, the suspect attempted to offer the officers an amount of GH¢150,000 in an effort to avoid arrest. The offer was declined, and the suspect was taken into custody.
