Officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service intercepted a significant shipment of illicit substances near the border town of Aflao. According to a 3News report, the team discovered over 500 compressed slabs of suspected Indian hemp hidden within a commercial vehicle. The substances were concealed beneath layers of charcoal bags to evade detection at security checkpoints.
The operation occurred along the main road leading toward the border between Ghana and Togo. A report from Citi Newsroom indicate that the police acted on intelligence regarding the movement of narcotics in the Volta Region. The truck driver and his assistants were reportedly detained at the scene for further interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation into the smuggling attempt.
Authorities have transported the seized slabs to the regional police headquarters for forensic analysis and verification. A GhanaWeb report states that the police are currently conducting a search for the owners of the consignment. Prosecutors are expected to prepare charges related to the possession and transport of narcotic drugs without lawful authority once the preliminary investigation concludes.
While the specific destination of the truck remains unconfirmed, police sources suggest the cargo was intended for cross-border transit. The Ghana Police Service has not yet released the names of the individuals in custody. This seizure represents one of the largest interceptions of compressed cannabis in the Aflao sector during the current quarter.
