The Narcotics Control Commission intercepted a massive shipment of suspected compressed cannabis on the morning of Friday October 18 2024. According to a report by 3News officials acted on a tip-off to halt a truck at the Dabala Checkpoint in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region.

A statement from the commission indicated that the suspected narcotics were hidden under other goods to evade detection during transit. The vehicle was reportedly heading toward the border when enforcement officers intervened. GhanaWeb reported that the commission is currently conducting an inventory to determine the exact weight and street value of the seized items.

The commission stated that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene during the initial inspection as reported by Citi Newsroom. Efforts are currently underway by the Narcotics Control Commission and local police to track the registered owner of the truck and any individuals linked to the smuggling attempt. The seized substance has been moved to a secure facility for forensic testing and verification.

Authorities have not yet filed formal charges as the investigation remains in its early stages. The commission urged the public to provide information regarding the movement of illicit substances through the region. This operation follows a series of recent Crackdowns on drug trafficking routes along the eastern corridors of Ghana as noted in official agency briefings.
