The Narcotics Control Commission intercepted a quantity of suspected marijuana on a truck at the Dabala checkpoint in the Volta Region. According to a MyJoyOnline report, the illegal substances were hidden inside hollowed out timber logs to evade detection by security officials. The operation led to the discovery of 541 slabs of the compressed plant material.
A statement from the Narcotics Control Commission as reported by Citi Newsroom indicates that the vehicle was traveling from the Oti Region toward the capital city of Accra. Officers conducting routine inspections flagged the truck after noticing irregularities in the cargo. Upon a closer search, the officials found that the timber had been professionally carved out to create storage space for the drugs.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene during the initial inspection as reported by various local outlets including GhanaWeb. Authorities have impounded the truck and the wooden logs containing the contraband substances. The Narcotics Control Commission stated that the seized items are currently in their custody for further testing and forensic analysis to confirm the chemical composition of the slabs.
The Commission is working with other security agencies to track the owner of the vehicle and the individuals involved in the distribution network. This seizure is part of an ongoing effort by the Narcotics Control Commission to curb the transit of illegal narcotics through major checkpoints according to official departmental communications. No formal charges have been filed yet as the primary suspect remains at large.
