The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority intercepted a large consignment of suspected narcotics at the Aflao border post in the Volta Region. According to a report by 3News, officers discovered the substances concealed within a cargo truck that was attempting to cross into the Republic of Togo.
Official reports from the Ghana Revenue Authority indicate that the intercepted items consisted of several bundles of compressed plant material suspected to be cannabis. Graphic Online reported that the seizure occurred during a routine scanning and physical examination of departing vehicles by the border security team.
The driver of the vehicle was immediately apprehended and remains in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations. A report by Citi Newsroom stated that the suspect is being questioned to determine the origin of the illegal substance and the identities of those involved in the smuggling attempt.
Authorities have handed over the seized packages to the Narcotics Control Commission for forensic analysis and verification of the weight and potency. The Ghana Revenue Authority informed the press that security measures at the eastern frontier have been intensified to prevent the illegal transit of prohibited goods.
While the initial assessment by customs officers identifies the material as cannabis, the legal classification remains pending until a formal report is issued by the Ghana Standards Authority or the Narcotics Control Commission. This investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Aflao District Police Command according to local media accounts.
