Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, stated that 84 people are currently in custody facing various narcotics-related charges. He also revealed that nearly 73 assets, suspected to be linked to individuals under investigation, have been frozen. These actions are part of government efforts to strengthen drug enforcement and asset recovery. Mr. Muntaka credited the judiciary and the Attorney-General’s Department for supporting reforms that improve the prosecution of narcotics cases and prevent offenders from retaining assets linked to their activities. He highlighted that specially trained officers now have prosecutorial powers, allowing them to handle cases directly. The minister explained that the government is also changing its approach to asset recovery by identifying and securing suspected proceeds of crime earlier in investigations, rather than waiting until the conclusion of the main narcotics case. Assets can be transferred to the state following a conviction and the appropriate legal process, after which the government may auction them.
