A thirty five year old man has been remanded into police custody by the Tamale Circuit Court for his alleged involvement in a case of domestic violence. According to a Ghana News Agency report the suspect is accused of causing grievous bodily harm to his spouse during a confrontation at their residence in the Northern Regional capital. The identity of the accused has been withheld by some outlets pending further proceedings while other local reports from Diamond FM suggest the incident occurred over a disagreement regarding domestic finances.

During the court session presided over by His Honour Justice Eric Ansah the prosecution detailed that the victim sustained multiple injuries and required immediate medical attention at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The prosecution argued for the suspect to be remanded to prevent potential interference with witnesses and the ongoing investigation. Daily Graphic reports indicate that the police are still gathering evidence and medical reports to solidify the case against the accused individual.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges during his initial appearance. Legal representation for the accused requested bail but the court denied the application citing the severity of the alleged injuries and the safety of the victim. This decision was documented in court records and observed by personnel from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service who are assisting with the prosecution according to Citi Newsroom coverage of the proceedings.

The case has been adjourned and the suspect is scheduled to reappear before the Tamale Circuit Court on a later date to be determined by the registrar. Ghana News Agency notes that the victim remains under medical supervision while social welfare officers have been notified to provide necessary support services. The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to prosecuting domestic violence cases to the full extent of the law as reported in their local status updates.
