The government is adding facial recognition to the SIM card re-registration process. This new step was announced by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George.
The Minister explained that this is to stop people from using fake Ghana Cards to register SIM cards. He stated that many SIM cards registered earlier might have been linked to fake identification.
He noted that about 81.1% of SIM cards that went through the first part of registration could be connected to these fraudulent Ghana Cards. This detail was stated by the Minister.
The goal is to make sure each SIM card is linked to a real person. This will help improve security across the country.
Facial recognition technology will be used to verify individuals during the re-registration. This process will help confirm that the person registering the SIM card is indeed the owner.
The Ministry believes this will make it harder for criminals to use unregistered or falsely registered SIM cards for illegal activities.
This effort is part of the ongoing SIM re-registration exercise. Authorities are working to ensure all SIM cards are properly identified.
The Minister’s statements highlighted the importance of accurate identification in the digital age.
