Members of a specialized police unit conducted a targeted operation in Koforidua to dismantle a suspected criminal network focused on online extortion. According to a Citi Newsroom report, the raid resulted in the arrest of seven individuals who are believed to be part of a syndicate specializing in sextortion tactics across the Eastern Region.

The operation targeted a hideout where the group allegedly managed digital platforms to entrap victims. A Ghana Police Service statement noted that the suspects allegedly used compromised social media accounts and deceptive messaging to obtain sensitive images from the youth before demanding payment to prevent their release.

Investigators at the scene seized several electronic devices including mobile phones and laptop computers which are currently undergoing forensic examination. Daily Guide Ghana reported that the suspects were taken into police custody for interrogation while authorities work to identify the full extent of the syndicate operations and any potential accomplices still at large.

Legal proceedings are expected to commence once the Cybercrime Unit concludes its preliminary assessment of the digital evidence. A report from GhanaWeb indicates that the Eastern Regional Police Command has increased surveillance on internet cafes and residential hubs suspected of hosting similar cybercrime activities.

The identities of the seven suspects have not yet been officially released to the public by the Ghana Police Service. Officials have urged victims of online harassment or extortion in Koforidua and surrounding areas to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation while emphasizing that the suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
