The Cybercrime Unit of the Ghana Police Service has taken two information technology experts into custody following an investigation into a digital security breach at a rural bank located in the Eastern Region. According to a MyJoyOnline report the suspects are alleged to have gained unauthorized access to the internal database of the financial institution.
Official details from the police indicate that the individuals used their technical expertise to bypass security protocols. A Citi Newsroom report states that the primary objective of the infiltration was to divert funds from the bank accounts into private accounts controlled by the suspects. The specific amount of money involved in the alleged theft has not yet been disclosed by authorities.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the arrests were the result of a coordinated intelligence operation following a complaint filed by the management of the affected bank. MyJoyOnline reports that the bank officials noticed irregularities in their digital ledger during a routine internal audit which prompted the immediate involvement of national security agencies.
Investigators have seized various electronic devices and storage drives from the suspects for forensic examination. According to GhanaWeb reports these items will be analyzed to establish a digital trail of the transactions and to determine if other financial institutions were targeted in similar schemes. The suspects remain in custody while the case is prepared for official prosecution.
Legal proceedings are expected to commence at the High Court once the Cybercrime Unit concludes its preliminary findings. The suspects maintain their right to a fair trial and are currently considered innocent according to Ghanaian law. Police officials have urged rural banks to enhance their cybersecurity infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
