An Accra circuit court has remanded a 30-year-old man, Ahmed Hassan Abdul Razzaq, in police custody after he was charged with publishing false information about an alleged plot to kill President John Dramani Mahama.

Court proceedings before the Adenta Circuit Court on January 25, 2026, resulted in the remand after the prosecution told the court that Razzaq had posted a video on his TikTok account, @breakingnewsghana, claiming two named military personnel were planning an assassination. He was arrested on January 21, 2026, at Adjiriganor in the Greater Accra Region, one day after the video was posted.

In the video, which police described as potentially causing fear and panic, Razzaq allegedly named Sergeant Amoh and Sergeant Joseph as being involved in the purported plot. The prosecution said the claims were unfounded, and law enforcement began inquiries into the source of the video and the suspect’s conduct.

During his caution statement, Razzaq acknowledged that he made and published the video. He told investigators he did not personally know the officers he named and stated that he had come across a post on social media suggesting an assassination plot, which prompted him to record and share the video. Police said he could not identify or produce the original source of that alleged post.

The court declined to take the accused’s plea and ordered that he remain in police custody. His next court appearance was scheduled for February 9, 2026 as investigations continue.

The prosecution in the matter is being led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo. Police have not publicly disclosed whether formal charges beyond “false publication” have been filed or how the case will proceed once investigations conclude. Razzaq is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of competent jurisdiction.
