The Economic and Organised Crime Office known as EOCO has conducted a targeted operation in East Legon resulting in the discovery of a suspected identity theft ring. According to a Citi Newsroom report the group is alleged to have focused on compromising international bank accounts. Officials stated that the cell operated with a high level of sophistication to evade standard detection methods.
Investigations by the state agency suggest the operation involved the illegal acquisition of personal data belonging to individuals outside of Ghana. A report by Graphic Online indicates that the total value associated with the suspected fraudulent activities reaches approximately two million dollars. EOCO officials have reportedly seized several electronic devices and specialized software used to facilitate these unauthorized transactions.
Authorities have not yet published the names of the individuals taken into custody during the raid. A Daily Guide Network report mentions that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation at the EOCO headquarters to determine the full extent of their network. Prosecutors are expected to prepare formal charges related to cyber fraud and money laundering once preliminary investigations are completed.
While the initial report from Citi Newsroom highlights the two million dollar figure investigators note that this remains an estimate subject to verification of digital evidence. The Economic and Organised Crime Office has reiterated its commitment to monitoring high end residential areas for illicit technological hubs. No official court date has been scheduled as of the time of this publication according to official statements.
