The Cyber Security Authority issued an official alert following multiple reports of fraudulent activities involving automated teller machines across the Greater Accra Region. According to the 3News report, officials discovered sophisticated skimming devices attached to various bank terminals over the recent weekend. These devices are allegedly designed to capture sensitive cardholder data and personal identification numbers from unsuspecting bank customers.

A public advisory released by the Cyber Security Authority highlights that these devices are often small and difficult to detect without close inspection. The authority noted that the suspected syndicate operates by installing these illicit tools on the external card slots of machines. Information from a Citi Newsroom report suggests that police are currently reviewing closed circuit television footage from impacted bank branches to identify the individuals responsible for the installations.

Bank customers are advised by the Cyber Security Authority to inspect ATM card slots for any loose or unusually bulky attachments before performing transactions. The agency recommends that individuals cover the keypad when entering their codes to prevent potential overhead cameras or nearby observers from recorded private credentials. A GhanaWeb report states that several commercial banks have also increased security patrols at their physical branches in response to these warnings.

The Cyber Security Authority has requested that any person who discovers suspicious hardware on an ATM should immediately report the finding to the bank or contact the National Computer Emergency Response Team. Officials emphasize that while investigations continue, the full extent of compromised data remains unconfirmed according to initial statements from the Ghana Police Service. No arrests have been publicly announced by the authorities at this stage of the investigation.
