Couples planning ordinance marriages in Ghana face the risk of their unions being invalid if the church and officiating minister are not legally recognized. This warning comes from Justice Alexander Osei-Tutu of the Court of Appeal.

Justice Osei-Tutu spoke at a webinar organized by MPOBB. He stated that many couples assume any church can perform a valid marriage ceremony.

He elaborated that both the place of worship and the person conducting the marriage must be registered according to the law. This ensures the marriage is legally binding.

The judge’s advice aims to prevent future legal issues for couples. These issues could arise if their marriage is later challenged on the grounds of improper solemnization.

The Judicial Service supports efforts to educate the public on marriage laws. This helps uphold the integrity of the marriage registration process in Ghana.

Couples are encouraged to verify the legal status of their chosen church and minister with the relevant authorities before their wedding day.

This measure will safeguard their marriage and future legal rights as a married couple.

The judiciary aims for all marriages to be conducted in a manner that is both legally sound and socially accepted.
