A former Attorney-General, Dr. Kunbuor, has said that the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act 2019, known as Act 999, cannot effectively end political vigilantism alone.
He explained that the law focuses on punishing individuals involved in vigilantism. However, it does not sufficiently address the political parties and actors who create the demand for these groups.
Dr. Kunbuor believes that for the law to be successful, it must also tackle the involvement of political parties in vigilantism.
He stated that the current approach of focusing only on criminal prosecutions is not enough.
The law was passed to address the rise of political vigilante groups in Ghana.
These groups have often been linked to violence during elections.
Dr. Kunbuor's comments suggest a need for broader reforms beyond just criminal penalties.
