A court has ordered Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, to defend himself against charges related to illegal mining. He is commonly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The court also ordered his company, Akonta Mining Limited, to provide its defense. The charges concern galamsey activities on a concession located in Samreboi.

The decision was made by the High Court in Accra. Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay presided over the case.

The court dismissed an earlier argument that Chairman Wontumi and his company had no case to answer. This means the legal process will continue with their defense.

The legal action follows allegations of engaging in illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the country.
