A High Court in Tema has handed down a death sentence to two individuals found guilty of the murder of a local businessman. The legal proceedings concluded this week after the prosecution successfully argued that the convicts were responsible for the fatal incident that occurred in 2021.

According to court records the two men were apprehended shortly after the gruesome attack took place. Investigators provided evidence showing that the act was premeditated and resulted in the immediate death of the victim. The identity of the deceased had been confirmed during the early stages of the police inquiry.

During the trial the presiding judge noted that the evidence presented by the state was sufficient to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. The defense had attempted to argue for leniency but the court maintained that the nature of the crime warranted the maximum penalty under current statutes.

The sentencing marks the end of a long legal process that has been closely monitored by the business community in Tema. Although Ghana maintains the death penalty on its books for certain offenses such sentences are often commuted to life imprisonment by the sitting President.

Witnesses who testified during the hearings described the events leading up to the discovery of the body. Forensic reports and witness statements played a crucial role in securing the conviction of the two accused persons who have now been remanded to prison custody to await their fate.
