A Takoradi Circuit Court presided over by Judge Ama Panyin has sentenced a landlord named Emmanuel Kwofie to fifteen years in hard labor. The court found Kwofie guilty of causing grievous bodily harm during an altercation with his tenant. The incident occurred at the landlord's residence in the Western Region where a disagreement over rent arrears escalated into physical violence. Reports from MyJoyOnline state that the convict used a sharp object to inflict deep wounds on the victim during the 2023 encounter.
Technical evidence and witness testimonies presented during the trial indicated that the victim suffered significant injuries to his head and limbs. According to a Citi Newsroom report the prosecution established that the landlord attacked the tenant without provocation after an initial verbal exchange. The victim was rushed to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for emergency treatment where he remained for several weeks. Medical records submitted to the court confirmed the severity of the trauma sustained by the complainant.
During the sentencing hearing the presiding judge noted the increasing frequency of violent landlord and tenant disputes in the region. The court emphasized that even in cases of non payment of rent the law does not permit property owners to take the law into their own hands. GhanaWeb reports that the defense plea for a lighter sentence was rejected based on the nature of the weapon used and the lasting physical impact on the victim. The verdict aims to serve as a deterrent to others who might resort to violence in residential civil matters.
Local authorities and the Western Regional Police Command have cautioned the public to use the Rent Control Department for resolving disputes. Under the Rent Act of 1963 landlords are required to follow formal eviction and debt recovery procedures through legal channels. The convict has been transported to the Sekondi Central Prison to begin his sentence according to statements from court officials. The victim has since been discharged from the hospital but continues to undergo outpatient rehabilitation for his injuries.
