The Tema Circuit Court has sentenced a security guard identified as Samuel Asante to fifteen years in prison with hard labor for stealing a Toyota Fortuner from his employer. According to a Modern Ghana report, the accused person took advantage of his position to gain access to the vehicle keys and relocate the luxury SUV without authorization. The court presided over by His Honour Benedict Obiri found the evidence provided by the prosecution sufficient to establish the guilt of the convict beyond reasonable doubt.

Initial investigations by the Ghana Police Service revealed that Asante fled towards the border shortly after taking the vehicle from a residence in Tema. A report by MyJoyOnline states that the convict intended to dispose of the Toyota Fortuner in the Republic of Togo where he entered into negotiations with potential buyers. The police tracked the vehicle movement through intelligence gathering and coordination with cross border security agencies who assisted in the arrest and recovery of the property.

During the court proceedings, the vehicle owner testified that the security guard had been in his employment for several months before the incident occurred. Court documents cited by GhanaWeb indicate that the convict initially pleaded not guilty to the charges of stealing but the prosecution presented forensic evidence and witness statements that linked him directly to the theft. The judge noted that the stiff sentence serves as a deterrent to others who might consider abusing the trust of their employers.

The stolen Toyota Fortuner has since been returned to the rightful owner following the conclusion of the trial. The Ghana Police Service commended the cooperation of the public and the swift action of the investigative team in tracking the vehicle across the border. While the defense requested a more lenient sentence, the court upheld the fifteen year term due to the gravity of the breach of trust and the high value of the stolen asset as detailed in the official court record.
