An Accra Circuit Court has handed down a significant fine to a 42-year-old miner. The court found him guilty of engaging in illegal mining.
The miner was convicted on two charges. These included conspiracy to commit a crime and undertaking mining operations without the proper license.
The court ordered him to pay a fine of GH₵60,000. Failure to pay this fine will result in a three-year prison sentence.
This ruling comes as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the country. The Judicial Service confirmed the sentence.
The illegal mining, often referred to as galamsey, has led to environmental damage and social concerns.
Authorities continue to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in such unlawful practices.
