Ghanaian courts do not automatically divide marital property equally between spouses after a divorce. This was stated by Ekua Abirago Buamponsem, a lawyer with FIDA-Ghana.
Buamponsem explained that the courts consider fairness and equity when making decisions about jointly acquired property.
This means the division may not always be a 50-50 split.
The focus is on what is just and right for both parties involved.
This approach ensures that the distribution of assets reflects the specific circumstances of each marriage.
The International Federation of Women Lawyers advocates for fair treatment in such matters.
