The Kyebi Circuit Court has remanded twelve suspects into police custody for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey. According to a MyJoyOnline report the individuals were apprehended during a coordinated weekend raid conducted by security forces within the Eastern Region. The suspects were brought before the court yesterday to face charges related to the unauthorized exploitation of mineral resources and environmental degradation.

A Citi Newsroom report indicates that the operation targeted several active mining sites where heavy machinery and mining equipment were observed. During the court proceedings the prosecution requested more time to conclude investigations and track down potential accomplices who remain at large. The presiding judge granted the application for remand to ensure the suspects remain available for further questioning by the Ghana Police Service and specialized task forces.

The Ghana Grounded News report notes that the suspects include both local operators and individuals from other regions who were allegedly caught in the act of washing ore near water bodies. Defense counsel for some of the accused argued for bail citing the presumption of innocence and ready sureties. However the court upheld the prosecution’s concerns regarding the severity of the charges and the potential for interference with ongoing field investigations.

Authorities from the Minerals Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources have intensified their monitoring efforts in the Kyebi enclave to curb the destruction of forest reserves and river systems. A GhanaWeb report mentions that officials seized several water pumping machines and various hand tools at the scene of the arrests. The case has been adjourned and the suspects are expected to reappear in court later this month while the police continue to process forensic evidence from the site.
