A Koforidua High Court presided over by a presiding judge has sentenced three individuals to 15 years in prison each for their participation in organized highway robberies. The convicts were identified following a string of attacks that occurred on the Accra Kumasi highway several months ago. Police reports indicated that the group frequently barricaded sections of the road to intercept passenger vehicles during the night.

The prosecution presented evidence showing that the men utilized weapons to intimidate drivers and passengers into surrendering cash and mobile electronic devices. Witnesses during the trial testified to the traumatic nature of the encounters which sparked significant public safety concerns across the Eastern Region. Law enforcement agencies conducted a targeted operation that eventually led to the apprehension of the suspects in their hideouts.

During the court proceedings the prosecution argued that a custodial sentence was necessary to serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar criminal activities. The defense counsel had requested leniency but the judge insisted that the gravity of the offenses required a firm response from the judiciary. The court noted that the safety of commuters on national highways is a matter of high priority for the state.

Local authorities have welcomed the verdict as a victory for public safety and the rule of law. The Eastern Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constant patrols along the major transit corridors to prevent future incidents. The three convicts have since been transported to a correctional facility to begin serving their respective terms after the final judgment was read.
