The Kintampo Circuit Court in the Bono East Region has sentenced two men to 15 years in hard labor each for their involvement in a highway robbery. The convicts identified as Awudu Amadu and Ibrahim Umaru were found guilty of attacking travelers on the main road connecting Kintampo and Buipe. According to a Ghana Police Service statement the incident occurred near the community of Dawadawa Number Two where the suspects blocked the road to intercept vehicles.
Police investigators told the court that the two convicts used a locally manufactured shotgun and other dangerous weapons to intimidate their victims. Reports from 3News and Citi Newsroom indicate that the swift arrest followed a distress call from one of the victims who managed to reach the police patrol team stationed along the highway. The security forces moved to the location and apprehended the suspects shortly after the robbery took place.
During the court proceedings the prosecution presented the recovered items including the weapon and stolen mobile phones as evidence. The Kintampo Circuit Court judge emphasized that the heavy sentence was necessary to serve as a deterrent to others considering similar criminal activities on the North South corridor. Both Amadu and Umaru admitted to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery according to official court records.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the victims were rescued without sustaining life threatening injuries though some travelers reported the loss of cash and personal electronics. While the 3News report highlighted the speed of the judicial process the police have urged residents and motorists to remain vigilant. The authorities stated that they are continuing investigations to determine if these individuals are linked to other unresolved robberies in the Bono East Region.
