A California appeals court has ruled that musician Jay-Z cannot sue a personal injury lawyer. The lawsuit was filed against Tony Buzbee.
Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, had sued Buzbee for extortion and defamation. This action followed a lawsuit Buzbee filed in 2024.
The earlier lawsuit accused Jay-Z of raping a 13-year-old girl. It also named Sean Combs as a defendant in the case.
Buzbee is known for representing clients in high-profile cases. He filed the original suit in Texas.
Jay-Z's legal team argued that Buzbee's actions were intended to harm his reputation. They sought damages for this alleged harm.
However, the appeals court disagreed. It found that Buzbee was acting within his rights as an attorney representing a client.
The court's decision means Jay-Z's lawsuit against Buzbee has been dismissed. This ruling does not affect the original rape accusation lawsuit.
