The Accra High Court will on March 16 decide if Bernard Antwi Boasiako, chairman of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, must stand trial. The case involves allegations of illegal mining.

Mr. Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, faces charges concerning mining activities on his concession at Samreboi. These activities are alleged to have occurred without the necessary permits.

Lawyers representing the owner of Akonta Mining Company Ltd filed a submission of no case on February 18. This means they believe there is not enough evidence to continue the trial.

The court's decision on this submission will determine the next steps in the legal proceedings against Chairman Wontumi.

This case falls under illegal mining, also known as galamsey. This is a significant issue in Ghana due to environmental damage.
