A domestic worker appeared before an Accra Circuit Court following allegations of theft involving cash and jewelry valued at GH¢200,000. According to a MyJoyOnline report the incident occurred at a residence in East Legon on Thursday. The prosecution alleges that the suspect took advantage of her access to the property to remove the high value items and currency from the employer room.
Court proceedings detailed that the items missing include several pieces of gold jewelry and a significant amount of cash in both local and foreign denominations. A GhanaWeb report indicates that the complainant discovered the loss shortly after the worker failed to report for her regular duties. The police were subsequently notified and initiated an investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect in a different region.
The presiding judge heard that the suspect has denied the charges during initial interrogation sessions. A Citi Newsroom report notes that the prosecution requested more time to conclude investigations and recover the missing assets. The court has remanded the accused into custody while the Ghana Police Service continues to track the movement of the stolen property and verify the claims made by the complainant.
Legal representatives for the accused argued for bail stating that the suspect is not a flight risk and will cooperate with the ongoing trial. However the prosecution opposed the bail application citing the gravity of the offense and the substantial amount involved in the case. The Accra Circuit Court adjourned the matter to a later date for further hearing and possible consideration of bail terms as the investigation progresses.
