A 24 year old domestic employee identified as Janet Owusu has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court. According to the Starr FM report the judge handed down the custodial sentence after the accused person pleaded guilty to charges related to the theft of jewelry from her employer. The incident took place at a residence located in East Legon which is an upscale suburb of Accra.

Court proceedings indicated that the stolen items were valued at several thousands of Ghana cedis. A GhanaWeb report corroborated that the employer discovered the items missing and reported the matter to the police which led to the arrest of the domestic worker. The prosecution presented evidence that the accused had access to the private quarters of the home where the jewelry was stored.

During the sentencing the presiding judge noted the breach of trust between the employee and the employer. A Graphic Online report mentioned that the court aimed to use the sentence as a deterrent to others in similar positions of employment. The specific inventory of the stolen items included necklaces and bracelets although the exact resale value of the recovered pieces remains unconfirmed by official police statements.

The Accra Circuit Court ordered that the domestic help serve her full term at the Nsawam Female Prison. While the defense requested leniency based on the age of the accused the court maintained that the gravity of the theft warranted a significant custodial sentence. Domestic workers are often cautioned by the Ghana Police Service to undergo thorough background checks before final employment to prevent such occurrences in residential areas.
