An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a domestic worker named Mavis Akordor to twenty months of imprisonment with hard labor. The court delivered the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to charges of stealing from her employer at a residence in East Legon. According to the Pulse Ghana report the stolen items included various pieces of jewelry and an undisclosed amount of cash totaling fifty thousand Ghana Cedis.
Court proceedings detailed that the complainant discovered her jewelry boxes were empty and subsequently confronted her domestic staff. The GhanaWeb report indicates that the accused initially denied the allegations before later confessing to the crime during police interrogations. Investigating officers from the Ghana Police Service managed to recover some of the stolen gold jewelry from a buyer who assisted with the inquiry.
The presiding judge Samuel Bright Acquah noted the gravity of the breach of trust in the employer and employee relationship during the sentencing. A report by the Daily Guide Network clarifies that the court considered the plea of the accused and the fact that she was a first time offender when determining the length of the custodial sentence. The prosecution led by Inspector Isaac Kwadwo Asare presented evidence that the incident occurred over several weeks.
The Accra Circuit Court ordered that the recovered items be returned to the rightful owner. Pulse Ghana reports that the convict expressed remorse during the trial and asked for leniency before the final judgment was read. The case concludes the legal process regarding the theft which was first reported to the East Legon Police Station earlier this month.
