The Accra High Court has ordered Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, to begin his defence in a case involving illegal mining. He is the regional chairman for the NPP in the Ashanti Region.
The court made this decision on Monday, March 16. The case relates to alleged illegal mining operations on a concession in Samreboi, located in the Western Region.
Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining, are the subjects of the legal action. The prosecution had urged the court to reject a submission made by the defense asking the case to be thrown out.
The court's order requires Chairman Wontumi to now present his side of the story and evidence to counter the allegations.
This legal proceeding is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to address illegal mining activities in the country.
The Judicial Service will oversee the continuation of the trial as the defense opens.
Further court dates will be set for the presentation of evidence by Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining.
