A High Court in Accra has ruled that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, must defend himself against charges of illegal mining. He is also known as Chairman Wontumi.
The court’s decision means that both Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, must now present their side of the story.
These charges are related to allegations of illegal mining activities concerning a concession in Samreboi.
The ruling came after the court reviewed the evidence presented so far. Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay presided over the case.
The court dismissed a submission made by Wontumi’s legal team. This submission argued that there was no case for him to answer.
By dismissing this submission, the court found that there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the trial.
Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining Limited will now have to provide their defense to the court.
The legal proceedings will continue to determine the facts of the galamsey allegations.
