A Circuit Court presided over by His Honour Felix Datsomor has sentenced three men to 15 years imprisonment each for their roles in a highway robbery. The convicts identified as Haruna Issah and Ridwan Inusah and Amidu Bukari were found guilty of attacking travelers on the main road connecting Bolgatanga and Tamale. The Ghana News Agency reports that the court handed down the sentence after the prosecution established the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed through an official statement that the individuals were part of a criminal gang that targeted commercial vehicles and private travelers. According to the police report the gang used offensive weapons to barricade the road and dispossess victims of their mobile phones and cash and other personal effects. Officers from the Upper East Regional Police Command conducted the operation that led to their apprehension following a tip off from the public.
During the court proceedings the prosecution presented evidence including recovered electronic devices and witnesses who identified the suspects according to a GhanaWeb report. The court heard that the incidents occurred in the early weeks of the month causing significant distress to road users in the northern corridor. While the defense requested leniency the presiding judge noted the gravity of the offense and the need to deter others from similar criminal activities.
Graphic Online reports that the convicts will serve their sentences at the Navrongo Central Prison. The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to maintaining safety on major highways and has urged citizens to provide timely information on suspicious activities. This verdict follows a series of interventions by the police to curb the rise of highway robberies in the Upper East Region according to official regional security briefings.
