The Asokwa District Court presided over by His Worship Johnson Abbey has ordered the remand of three individuals suspected of involvement in the murder of Akwasi Banahene. According to a Ghana Police Service statement the deceased was a well known businessman and a contractor before he was fatally shot at his residence in the Ashanti Region.
Police prosecutors informed the court that the investigation remains active and requested additional time to finalize the charge sheet and gather witness statements. A report by Graphic Online indicates that the victim was returning home when he was targeted by armed assailants who fled the scene immediately after the shooting occurred.
A Citi Newsroom report notes that the suspects were apprehended following intelligence led operations conducted by the Ashanti Regional Police Command. The prosecution argued that the suspects should remain in custody to prevent potential interference with the ongoing probe into the motive behind the attack.
The defense counsel for the suspects argued for bail citing the constitutional right to liberty yet the court denied the application based on the gravity of the offense. A GhanaWeb report mentions that the magistrate scheduled the next court appearance for two weeks time to allow the security agencies to complete their forensic analysis of evidence retrieved from the crime scene.
Community members and colleagues of the deceased attended the proceedings in large numbers seeking justice for the fallen entrepreneur. The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm while the criminal justice system processes the case and continues to search for any additional accomplices tied to the incident.
