An Accra High Court has sentenced three individuals to a combined forty five years in prison for their roles in an armed robbery. According to a report by MyJoyOnline, the convicts identified as Samuel Tetteh, Isaac Boateng, and Kofi Mensah were found guilty of multiple counts of robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime. The court proceedings established that the group used firearms to intimidate and dispossess residents of their belongings during a violent encounter last December.
A MyJoyOnline report indicates that the prosecution presented evidence showing the men targeted a residential neighborhood in Accra. The victims testified that the attackers broke into their homes during the late hours and held them at gunpoint while demanding cash and electronic devices. The Ghana Police Service corroborated these accounts through investigative reports which linked the three men to the stolen items recovered during their arrest shortly after the incident.
During the sentencing phase, the presiding judge noted the gravity of the offense according to an account from Citi Newsroom. The court held that the use of lethal weapons posed a significant threat to public safety and justified a harsh custodial sentence. Each convict was handed a fifteen year term to be served at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. The defense counsels had pleaded for leniency citing that the men were first time offenders but the court rejected these pleas in favor of a deterrent sentence.
Additional details from a GhanaWeb report state that the stolen items included mobile phones, laptops, and a significant amount of Ghanaian Cedis. These items were presented as exhibits during the trial. The Ghana Police Service statement following the verdict praised the swift judicial process and reaffirmed the commitment of the security agencies to protecting lives and property. The three convicts have been remanded into the custody of the Ghana Prisons Service to begin their sentences immediately.
