The Accra High Court presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo has handed down a death sentence to two individuals involved in the 2021 Kasoa ritual murder case. This decision follows a jury trial where the two accused persons were found guilty of conspiracy and the murder of Ishmael Mensah Abdallah. The incident occurred in April 2021 and drew widespread condemnation from various sectors of the Ghanaian public due to the age of the victim and the alleged motives behind the act.

During the proceedings the prosecution established that the convicts lured the ten year old victim to an uncompleted building where they attacked and killed him. Evidence presented in court suggested the act was influenced by instructions from a traditional priest who promised the young men wealth in exchange for human remains. The court noted that the actions were premeditated and executed with significant deliberation despite the young age of the perpetrators at the time of the incident.

The defense counsel argued for leniency and highlighted the youth of the individuals involved. However the jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict after deliberating on the evidence and testimonies provided throughout the trial. The judge emphasized that the law required a capital sentence for the crime of murder under the current statutes of Ghana. This ruling remains one of the most significant judicial outcomes regarding crimes involving minors in recent years.

The family of the deceased expressed a measure of relief following the pronouncement of the sentence. Family spokespersons stated that while the legal outcome cannot restore the life of their relative it provides a sense of justice for the community. The convicts will remain in custody as the state begins the process of implementing the court orders. Legal analysts suggest this case may serve as a critical reference for future trials involving violent crimes committed under the guise of ritual beliefs.
