An Accra Circuit Court has ordered the remand of two men accused of orchestrating a fraudulent gold transaction involving fifty thousand dollars. The suspects appeared before the presiding judge to face charges related to conspiracy to commit a crime and defrauding by false pretense.
According to the prosecution the accused persons allegedly approached a foreign investor with a proposal to sell five kilograms of gold bars. The complainant reportedly made an initial payment of fifty thousand dollars to facilitate the deal however the suspects failed to provide the precious minerals as agreed.
Police investigators stated that the suspects purportedly used deceptive means to convince the investor of the legitimacy of their operations. After receiving the funds the accused persons allegedly became unreachable which prompted the victim to report the matter to the authorities for further action.
Defense counsel requested bail for the accused persons arguing that they would cooperate with the litigation process. The court denied the application citing the need for the police to conclude their inquiries and ensure the suspects do not interfere with potential witnesses or evidence.
The court proceedings revealed that the gold bars presented during the initial negotiations were suspected to be counterfeit materials. Forensic tests are expected to be conducted on the seized items to confirm their chemical composition and provide more clarity for the ongoing trial.
The two men are scheduled to reappear in court next month when the trial is expected to continue with additional witness testimony. The presiding judge emphasized that the accused remain innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
