An Accra Circuit Court has ordered the remand of five individuals accused of participating in land guard activities within the Bortianor area. The suspects were brought before the court following a police operation aimed at curbing land related violence and illegal land guarding practices in the Greater Accra Region.
The prosecution informed the court that the accused persons were allegedly involved in threatening residents and property owners. It is alleged that the suspects used intimidation tactics to prevent developers from accessing their rightfully acquired land. These activities have reportedly caused significant distress among the local community members in recent months.
According to the police report the suspects were apprehended during a targeted sweep of the area after multiple complaints were filed by affected residents. The investigators stated that the group is suspected of working for unidentified individuals to forcefully seize land or extort money from legitimate owners under the guise of security.
The presiding judge noted the gravity of the allegations and the potential threat to public order if the suspects were granted bail at this stage. Consequently the court remanded the five individuals into police custody to allow the prosecution more time to conclude its inquiries and gather essential evidence.
During the proceedings the defense counsel requested bail for the accused suggesting they would comply with all judicial requirements. However the court declined the request based on the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need to maintain peace in the Bortianor enclave.
The case has been adjourned with the suspects expected to reappear in court for the next hearing. The police have reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling land guard syndicates that continue to pose a security challenge across the national capital and surrounding districts.
