An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a businessman into police custody following his alleged involvement in a fraudulent land scheme valued at five hundred thousand Ghana Cedis. The defendant appeared before the presiding judge to face charges related to defrauding by false pretenses after several complainants filed formal reports with the authorities regarding failed real estate transactions.
Prosecutors informed the court that the accused allegedly represented himself as a legitimate land owner with the authority to sell prime residential plots located in East Legon. According to the police findings the victims made various payments amounting to the substantial sum under the impression that they were securing legal titles to the properties.
The scheme reportedly came to light when the complainants attempted to begin development work on the sites only to be confronted by the actual owners of the land. Subsequent investigations by the police revealed that the accused person did not possess the legal documentation or the mandate to facilitate any sales for the parcels of land in question.
During the court proceedings the defense counsel requested bail for the accused person stating that he was a law-abiding citizen who would cooperate with the ongoing investigation. However the prosecution opposed the application and argued that the accused might interfere with witnesses or flee the jurisdiction given the gravity of the amount involved in the case.
The presiding judge sustained the objection of the prosecution and ordered that the suspect remain in custody to assist with further inquiries. The court emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the matter as more potential victims have started coming forward with similar allegations against the businessman in relation to other land deals.
The case has been adjourned to a later date for the continuation of the trial and for the formal filing of witness statements. The authorities have advised the general public to conduct extensive due diligence at the Lands Commission before making any financial commitments for real estate purchases in the capital to avoid falling victim to similar fraudulent activities.
